San Antonio de Bexar, formerly known as Villa de San Fernando de Bexar, was the first civil government established by the Spanish in the province of Texas. The county was named after San Antonio de Bexar, one of the 23 Mexican municipalities of Texas at the time of its independence. This settlement was created in 1731 when 55 canaries settled near the mission system that had been built around the source of the San Antonio River. The prison, located in the San Pedro springs, was founded in 1718 and was named after Viceroy Balthasar Manuel de Zúñiga y Guzmán Sotomayor y Sarmiento, second son of the Duke of Béjar (a city in Spain).
The modern city of San Antonio, in the U. S. state of Texas, also derives its name from San Antonio de Béjar. Counties with smaller populations are also affected by migration, but, in many cases, these counties are losing residents due to emigration to other Texas counties and have stable or low rates of domestic and international migration.
These layers of historic change have been reflected in the architecture of the Bexar County Courthouse. Bexar County was created on December 20, 1836 and encompassed nearly all of the western part of the Republic of Texas. Since its creation as part of New Spain, Bexar County has been under the political rule of several countries. The Texas State Seal inspired the Bexar County Seal and Coat of Arms.
It was the fifth seat of government in Bexar County. The first four were governed by a succession of governments and political entities, including Spain, Mexico, the Republic of Texas, the Confederate States of America, and the United States. In general, counties with larger populations have higher mobility rates, higher migration volumes, higher overall migration rates, and higher overall connectivity with other counties. It also presents a summary of the fastest-growing and declining counties in the state and a map of the geographical distribution of population. Immigrants are more likely to settle in the main county of an MSA, while domestic and internal migrants are more likely to disperse to suburban counties within the MSA.
